The Vintage Car Rally is one of the oldest events of Kolkata sponsored by The Statesman. Here we get the chance to see some of the rarest and stunning vintage and classic cars and motorcycles. It’s a once a year city event, usually held in December-January.
For me, I have been missing this event for last 2 years and this time I made it sure to attend it. The date was 19th January 2020, Sunday.
The venue for the Rally is the Eastern Command Stadium in Fort William, Kolkata. The vehicles take detours around Fort William and surrounding areas.
Fort William was once the headquarter of the British India operations and at present it’s the property of the Indian Army. It’s situated on the banks of the River Hoogly.
You could feel the transportation back in time to the first half and middle of the 20th century once the vintage and classic automobiles and motorcycles started appearing around in big numbers. No harm in imagining your existence back in time when you didn’t exist and when these vehicles were newly launched.
You would know that you are getting closer to the venue as the vehicles grow in number on the nearly roads leading to the Eastern Command Stadium.
While on road almost all the cars are under the supervision of a professional mechanic on board so that in case the engines run down, they would be able to fix it.
In the Eastern Command Stadium, you could see the vehicles parked in an array. They all look neatly maintained, recently woken up from their hibernation to present themselves to the world. They all appear like rare wines. The older, the better.
